Paul Espe

Chartered Physiotherapist, Active Release Techniques Provider & Instructor, Managing Director

Paul studied physiotherapy at renowned King’s College London and completed with a Bachelor Degree (with Honours) in 1997. He has since then taken multiple courses every single year to improve his knowledge and skills.

He has worked in hospitals, private clinics, professional sport (football, golf, the Windsurfing World Cup, powerlifters, track & field and more) and corporate companies. He gained a lot of experience working in England for nearly 10 years. He started and ran his own very successful clinic in Norway for 9 years).

When treating he often uses a combination of techniques that he feel will give the best results (see list). However, Active Release Techniques (ART®) is the foundation of everything he does. He has spent many years learning and perfecting this very popular technique, something which has earned him the level of international instructor. He travels abroad several times every year to teach other physiotherapist, chiropractors, osteopaths and other skilled therapists.

This treatment technique has made him understand the function of the body at a completely different level, and it has enabled him to locate and treat problems much more quickly and efficiently. Using ART in combination with other very good assessment and treatment techniques, he can

-treat current pains and problems (stiffens, tightness, weakness)
-prevent problems in the future
-improve function for better performance

ART® – Active Release Techniques

ART® is a patented state-of-the-art soft tissue treatment technique that treats problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and nerves.

All these structures are commonly affected by overuse, also known as Cumulative Trauma Disorder (CTD). Such conditions can often be resolved quickly and permanently with ART®.

This technique has been very popular in North-America and Canada for many years. The founder Dr Mike Leahy has spent more that 30 years developing and fine-tuning this technique. It is now becoming more readily available in Europa as well as Asia and Australia.

ART® is used to improve flexibility and function in and in-between different structures.
Every ART® session is a combination of assessment and treatment.
The ART® provider uses his hands to evaluate the texture, tightness, movement of muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments and nerves.
Abnormal tissues are treated by precisely directed tension combined with very specific patient movements.

This treatment form require the therapist to have an extremely high level of anatomy knowledge and some form of medical background.

It takes years of practice to master this treatment technique. It has taken Paul nearly 10 years to become an Certified International Instructor in ART®, enabling him to teach other Physiotherapist, Chiropator, Osteopaths etc.

Signs you may benefit from having ART® treatment

  • Pain or stiffness in your neck, back, shoulder, elbow hands, hip, knee, ankles or feet
  • Head, face or jaw pain
  • Increased pain when exercising
  • Numbness or tingling in arms, hands or legs
  • Reduced flexibility or mobility
  • Weakness

Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilisation

This is a treatment technique were the therapist use specially designed tools on the body to elicit a positive change in the body. It is used to treat pain and injury and to address tightness or limited range of movement from restricted soft tissues.

This treatment can promote a healing or physiological response by the body to change the soft tissues at a cellular level. This can soften and reduce scar tissue as well as make injured tissues stronger.

It can also have a significant effect on nerves and the surrounding muscles and fascia.

Dynamic Neuromuscular Stabilisation

This is a way of exercising in order to stimulate natural movement patterns.

Our brain is equipped with a ‘default program’, which is stimulated and developed during the first critical years of life.

During life we are affected by bad habits, injuries, illnesses and environmental factors that start to interfere with this default program and cause bad movement patterns.

Acupuncture is a form of alternative medicine and a key component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Fine  stainless steel needles are inserted at very specific points in the body for therapeutic or preventative purposes. The purpose is to alter the flow of ‘Qi’ (or energy) along one or more of the 13 meridians (energy channels).

This is a technique therapists and doctors use for the treatment of pain, muscular tension and movement impairments. The technique uses a ‘dry’ needle, one without medication or fluid to inject, inserting it directly into the problem area. Dry needling follows evidence-based guidlines. It is sometimes also called intramuscular stimulation.

Kinesiology Tape

This is a treatment technique using a special elastic tape (very similar to human skin, both in thickness and elasticity) designed to facilitate the body’s natural healing process while providing support and stability to muscles and joints without restricting the body’s range of motion as well as providing extended soft tissue manipulation to prolong.

Lymph drainage

The lymphatic system have nodules are spread throughout the whole body and they collect and cleans the lymphatic fluid.

This system has an important role in fighting infections and therfore and therefore an important part of the immune system. If the lymphatic system is not functioning properly it will cause swelling and affect the body’s functions.

A few facts:

-If you line up the whole lymphatic system it will reach around the earth…4 times!

-There is about 10 liters of lymph fluid in the body

-Ther are about 700 lymph nodes in the body, and about 1/3 of them are located in the neck/throat

-The lymphatic fluid has no colour

-The lymphatic fluid consist of about 90% water, 10 % proteins, hormones and waste products from the cells

*There are only two things that aid the flow of lymphatic fluid, Diaphragmatic breathing and movement of the body
